Freeling's History
The town of Freeling was officially planned in March 1860. This was done by Robert Stephenson. The town was named after Major-General Sir Arthur Henry Freeling. He was the Surveyor-General of South Australia from 1849 to 1861.
Freeling used to be a stop on the Gawler to Kapunda railway. This railway opened in 1860, but it is not used anymore. The Freeling Hotel opened in 1863. The Railway Hotel followed in 1867. The St Petri Lutheran Church, which is now a private home, was built in 1871. By 1866, about 60 people lived in Freeling.
Local Economy and Farming
The main way people in Freeling earn money is through farming. The land around Freeling is very good for growing cereal crops. Many people think it is some of the best farming land in Australia. The University of Adelaide's Roseworthy Campus is also nearby. This campus focuses on agricultural studies.
Freeling gets about 475 millimeters of rain each year. This rainfall helps farmers grow a lot of wheat. They can grow up to 5-6 tonnes of wheat per hectare. They also harvest thousands of acres of hay every year. A factory that makes parts for farm machines has been in Freeling for a long time.
Freeling on TV
Freeling is also famous because of a popular Australian TV show. The show is called McLeod's Daughters. Many parts of the town were used as sets for the show. For example, the Gungellan Hotel was once the Railway Hotel. The show also used a truckstop and the showgrounds in Freeling.
