A Look Back at Freeport's History
Long ago, during the California Gold Rush, most goods arrived in Sacramento by boat. Business owners had to pay taxes at the Sacramento port. In 1862, some clever business people decided to create a new port. This new port would be "free" of taxes, which is how Freeport got its name!
They also planned to build a railway. This railway would go around Sacramento. It would connect to another railroad between Sacramento and Folsom. For about three years, Freeport grew very fast. Its population reached 300 to 400 people during this time.
