Frenchtown is a small, unincorporated community in Ohio, United States. This means it's a group of homes and buildings that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. It is located in Darke County, within Wayne Township. You can find Frenchtown about two miles northwest of a village called Versailles. It sits where State Route 185 meets Burns and Mangen Roads.

A Look Back at Frenchtown's Past

Frenchtown was settled a long time ago, in the early 1800s. Most of the first settlers were people from France. Many came from regions called Alsace and Lorraine.

Keeping French Traditions Alive

These early settlers worked hard to keep their French traditions. Even into the late 1800s, the community was very Roman Catholic. Many public signs and writings were still in the French language.

Early Life in Frenchtown

Soon after Frenchtown was settled, people built stores and a school. However, the community never had its own post office. Residents had to get their mail from the post office in nearby Versailles.

Frenchtown Today

Over the years, Frenchtown has become much smaller. Today, not much is left except for houses and a church. This church, called Holy Family Catholic Church, is a very important landmark. It was built in the 1860s and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's a special place recognized for its history.
