Freswick (pronounced FREZZ-ik) is a small, quiet village in the Scottish Highlands. It is located in eastern Caithness, overlooking Freswick Bay to the east. Freswick is part of the Highland region of Scotland. The nearby village of Skirza is just northeast of Freswick.
What Does the Name Freswick Mean?
The name Freswick likely comes from an old language called Old Norwegian. It might mean 'Freyr's bay'. Freyr was an important god in Norse mythology. There is also a village called Fresvik in Norway today.
Another idea is that Freswick comes from 'Frisians' wick'. The Frisians were a group of people from a region called Frisia in the Netherlands and Germany. This idea is supported by old brooches found in Freswick. These brooches are similar to ones found in Frisia. For example, a piece of a Viking-Age brooch found in Freswick in 1939 looks like one found in Hallumerhoek, Friesland, in the Netherlands. This suggests a connection between these places a long time ago.
