Fried pickles, sometimes called frickles, are a popular snack food. They are often eaten in the Southern United States. To make them, slices of dill pickles are covered in a batter. Then, they are cooked by deep-frying until crispy and golden.

The Story of Fried Pickles

Fried pickles first became known in America in the early 1960s. The very first recipe for fried pickles was printed in a newspaper called the Oakland Tribune. This happened on November 19, 1962. That recipe was for "French Fried Pickles" and suggested using sweet pickle slices and pancake mix.

Fried dill pickles became even more famous thanks to Bernell "Fatman" Austin. He started selling them in 1963 at his restaurant, the Duchess Drive In, in Atkins, Arkansas. The "Fatman's Recipe" is a secret known only to his family. It is used once a year at the annual Picklefest in Atkins, which takes place every May. You can find a general recipe for Fried pickles on Wikibooks.

How People Enjoy Fried Pickles

Today, you can find fried pickles at many food festivals. They are also on the menus of restaurants all over the United States and in other places. People often eat them as an appetizer before their main meal. They can also be a tasty side dish with other foods.

Fried pickles are usually served with a creamy dipping sauce. A very common one is ranch dressing. Back in 1963, before ranch dressing was widely known, the Fatman offered ketchup as a dipping sauce for his fried pickles.
