History of Friendship
The city of Friendship was officially started in 1853. However, there was a post office in the area even earlier, around 1844. The city's layout was planned in 1858. It became an official city (incorporated) the next year, in 1859. W.P. Rice was the first mayor.
How Friendship Got Its Name
There's a cool story about how Friendship got its name. Back in 1884, when the post office was set up, there were two main stores nearby. Each store was about a mile away from where the post office was. To make things fair and easy for everyone, both stores decided to move. They met in the middle, right where downtown Friendship is today. This act of working together and being kind inspired the town's name: Friendship!
Railroad Connections
By the 1920s, the Birmingham and Northwestern Railroad built train tracks on the east side of town. They also built a train station there. This helped people and goods travel to and from Friendship.
