About the Fringe-Rush
What it Looks Like
The fringe-rush is a plant that lives for many years. It looks like a grass or a small herb. It usually grows to be about 0.3 to 0.6 meters (1 to 2 feet) tall. It grows in a "tufted" way, meaning it forms a dense clump.
This plant blooms, or flowers, between December and August. Its flowers are a mix of green and brown colors.
How it Lives and Grows
Fringe-rush plants can live for a long time, usually between six and ten years. They can start making seeds when they are two to three years old.
A special thing about this plant is that it can grow back after a fire. It has a hidden part called a lignotuber at its base. This lignotuber helps the plant resprout, or grow new shoots, even if the top part burns away.
Where it Grows
You can find the fringe-rush in different parts of Australia.
In Western Australia, it grows in and around wet places like swamps and claypans. It also likes sandy soils on sandstone hills. You can see it in the Kimberley and Pilbara regions there.
It also grows across the central part of the Northern Territory. This includes areas between Alice Springs and Katherine. You can also find it in some parts of Queensland.
