Fritule are a special treat from Croatia. They are small, delicious pastries often made during the Christmas holidays. They look a lot like tiny doughnuts.
Fritule are similar to other sweet fried doughs. For example, they are like the Italian zeppole and Venetian frìtole. They also resemble "oliebollen" from the Netherlands. These are often called "balls of oil."
What makes Fritule special? They are usually flavored with rum and fresh citrus zest. They also have raisins mixed into the dough. After they are cooked, they are often sprinkled with powdered sugar. In Slovenia, a similar pastry is made called "miške."
