Winning the 1954 FIFA World Cup
Fritz Laband's biggest moment came in 1954. He was chosen to be part of the West Germany team for the 1954 FIFA World Cup in Switzerland. This was a very important tournament for his country.
He made his first appearance for the national team less than two months before the World Cup began. During the tournament, he played in three of West Germany's six matches. For the semi-final and the final games, the coach, Sepp Herberger, decided to use another player, Josef Posipal, in Laband's position. Even so, Laband was a vital part of the team that won the World Cup. West Germany's victory in 1954 is often called "The Miracle of Bern."
