Frodsham Hodson (1770–1822) was an important English church leader and scholar. He became the Principal of Brasenose College, Oxford, a famous part of Oxford University, starting in 1809.

Frodsham Hodson's Life
Frodsham Hodson was born in Liverpool, England, on June 7, 1770. His father was also a church leader. Frodsham went to Manchester Grammar School from 1784 to 1787. After that, he studied at Brasenose College, Oxford.
His Time at Oxford
At Oxford, Frodsham earned several degrees. He became a B.A. in 1791 and a M.A. in 1793. Later, he earned degrees in divinity, becoming a B.D. in 1808 and a D.D. (Doctor of Divinity) in 1809.
In 1791, he received a special scholarship called a Hulmean exhibition. Soon after, he was chosen to be a Fellow at Brasenose College. In 1793, he won a university prize for his essay. The essay was about "The Influence of Education and Government on National Character."
Church Roles
In 1795, Hodson became a lecturer at St George's Church, Liverpool. He later became the chaplain there. He also worked as a public examiner at Oxford University in 1803–1804 and again from 1808–1810. In 1808, he became the rector of St Mary's, Stratford-by-Bow.
Leading Brasenose College
In 1809, Frodsham Hodson was chosen as the Principal of Brasenose College. He led the college for thirteen years. During this time, he was very involved in the activities of Oxford University. In 1818, he served as the Vice-Chancellor, which is a very high leadership role at the university.
In 1820, he was appointed Regius Professor of Divinity. This important position also came with a special role at Christ Church and the rectory of Ewelme. Many believed that a powerful leader, Lord Liverpool, planned for Hodson to become a bishop. However, Frodsham Hodson passed away on January 18, 1822, at the age of 51, after a short illness. He was buried at Brasenose College.
Frodsham Hodson's Works
Frodsham Hodson helped publish some books. In 1796, he edited Chronological Tables by Thomas Falconer. This means he prepared the book for publication. In the same year, he published his own work called The Eternal Filiation of the Son of God asserted on the Evidence of the Sacred Scriptures. He also published three sermons in Liverpool between 1797 and 1804.
Family Life
On June 30, 1808, Frodsham Hodson married Anne Dawson. She was the daughter of John Dawson from Mossley Hill, Liverpool. Frodsham and Anne had four daughters and one son. His wife, Anne, passed away on April 23, 1848.
