The Ship's Journey
The Frolic was built in Baltimore, a city on the east coast of the United States. It was a merchant ship, meaning it carried goods for trade.
Trading in China
Before it sank, the Frolic had traveled all the way to China. It was returning home with a valuable cargo. This cargo included beautiful porcelain items.
The Shipwreck of 1850
In 1850, the Frolic hit a hidden reef. This happened north of Point Cabrillo, not far from where the town of Mendocino is today. The ship was badly damaged and sank.
Discovery of Redwood Forests
The sinking of the Frolic led to an important discovery. People who were investigating the wreck found huge coast redwood forests nearby. These forests were a major resource.
Founding of Mendocino
The discovery of the redwoods started a big timber business in the area. Because of this, the town of Mendocino was founded in 1852. It began as a logging community. At first, it was even called Meiggsville.
What Happened to the Wreckage?
Over the years, parts of the Frolic have been found.
Salvaged Cannon
One interesting piece is a cannon from the ship. It was found by divers exploring underwater. Today, you can see this cannon at the Kelley House Museum in Mendocino.
Rediscovery and TV Show
The main wreckage of the Frolic was believed to be found again in 1984. Its story was even featured on a TV show. In 2003, the History Channel series Deep Sea Detectives had an episode about it. It was called "Gold Rush Disaster: The Frolic."
