Early Life and Military Career
Frutos Saavedra Meneses started his journey at the Military Academy in Segovia, Spain. He was a very good student and later became an instructor there, teaching others. He worked hard and rose through the ranks, eventually becoming a colonel in the army.
Mapping Spain
Saavedra joined the artillery corps, which is a part of the army that uses large guns. He was chosen to be part of the Spain Map Commission. This group was responsible for creating accurate maps of Spain. Here, he became good friends with Carlos Ibáñez e Ibáñez de Ibero.
Together, Saavedra and Ibáñez designed a special tool called a geodetic standard. This instrument was built in Paris by a famous maker named Jean Brunner. This tool was super important! It was used to measure the main starting line for Spain's entire mapping network. This helped create very precise maps of the country.
Political Journey
Frutos Saavedra also had a career in politics. He joined a political group called the Liberal Union. He became a member of parliament, representing the area of Coruña. He served four terms, which means he was elected four times between 1860 and 1866.
In 1864, he was given a big job: Director General of Public Works. This role meant he was in charge of important projects like building roads, bridges, and other public structures that help a country run smoothly.
Honored for His Work
Because of his excellent work in geodesy (measuring the Earth), Saavedra was chosen to join the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences in 1862. This is a very respected group of top scientists in Spain.
In 1867, he was also invited to become a member of the Royal Spanish Academy. This academy focuses on the Spanish language and literature. Sadly, he passed away unexpectedly before he could officially join this group.
