Fuente Obejuna is a town in Spain. It is located in the province of Córdoba, which is part of the Andalusia region. About 5,000 people live in this town.
Fuente Obejuna is about 98 kilometers (61 miles) away from Córdoba, the capital city of the province. The town became very famous because of a play written by Lope de Vega. The play is called Fuenteovejuna and it tells the story of an uprising that happened in the town in 1476.
The Name of Fuente Obejuna
The town is officially called Fuente Obejuna. However, you might also see it written as Fuente Ovejuna or Fuenteovejuna. This is because long ago, before the Real Academia Española (a group that sets rules for the Spanish language) was created, the letters "b" and "v" were used differently. So, all these spellings are correct!
Some people believe the town's name comes from an old Roman villa. This villa was called Fons Mellaria, which means "honey fountain." It was located about 5 kilometers (3 miles) from Fuente Obejuna, on a hill called Masatrigos. Roman ruins have been found there.
From Fons Mellaria, the name changed to Fuente Abejuna, meaning "bee fountain." Over time, this became Fuente Obejuna.
