The Fountain of Hispanicity is a special fountain found in the Plaza of Our Lady of the Pillar in Zaragoza, Spain. It is very close to the big Cathedral-Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar. This fountain was built in 1991 when the plaza was updated. It was created to celebrate something called Hispanicity.
What is Hispanicity?
Hispanicity refers to the shared culture, history, and language of countries that were once part of the Spanish Empire. This includes Spain itself and many countries in Latin America. The fountain helps people remember the connections between these places. It celebrates the rich heritage and traditions that link Spanish-speaking communities around the world.
The Fountain's Unique Design
The design of the Fountain of Hispanicity is quite unique. It actually shows a map of Latin America! If you look closely, you can see different parts of the continent.
- In the northern part of the fountain, there is a special groove. This groove forms the shape of the Yucatán Peninsula and Central America.
- A beautiful waterfall flows down into a large pond. This pond is shaped like South America. It's a clever way to show the geography of the region.
The fountain also has other interesting parts. There are three blocks made of concrete and covered with white marble. These blocks are different sizes. They are meant to remind us of the three ships that Christopher Columbus sailed on his first voyage: the Niña, Pinta, and Santa María. Next to these blocks, there is a concrete globe. This globe represents the world and the global connections of Hispanicity.
