The Fulda is an important river located in Hesse and Lower Saxony, two states in Germany. It's one of the two main rivers that come together to form the larger Weser river. The other river is called the Werra. The Fulda river is about 220.4 kilometres (137.0 mi) long, which is roughly the distance from London to Manchester!

Where the Fulda River Starts

The Fulda river begins high up in the Rhön mountains, specifically at a place called Wasserkuppe in Hesse. This area is known for its beautiful landscapes.

From its source, the river flows generally towards the northeast. As it travels, it has the Knüll mountains on its west side and the Seulingswald forest on its east side. When it gets close to the town of Bebra, the river changes direction and starts flowing towards the northwest.

The Fulda's Journey

The Fulda river continues its journey and is joined by another important river, the Eder. After this, the Fulda flows straight north until it reaches the city of Kassel.

Near Kassel, the river changes direction again, heading northeast. On its east side, you'll find the Kaufungen Forest, and to the northwest, the Reinhardswald forest begins.

The northern end of the Fulda river meets the Werra river in a town called Hannoversch Münden, which is in Lower Saxony. This meeting point is very special because it's where the Fulda and the Werra combine to create the mighty Weser river!

Cities Along the Fulda River

Many towns and cities have grown up along the banks of the Fulda river. These places often use the river for transport, trade, or simply for their beauty. Some of the main cities you'll find along the Fulda include:
