History of Fulton

Early Days and Settlers

Long ago, Native American groups, likely the Piscataway, used the land where Fulton is now. They hunted and farmed there. The first European survey of this land happened in 1700. It was done by Thomas Browne II, who was known as the "Patuxent Ranger."

In the mid-1700s, Richard Snowden bought large areas of land along the Patuxent River. At that time, Fulton was known as Queen Caroline Parish. In 1803, Rezin Hammond settled on some of this land. By 1805, the area had different names like "Hammond Directions" and "Snowden Second Addition." German immigrants also came to settle in the area around 1855.

Growth and New Name

In 1871, St. Paul's Lutheran Church was started to serve the German farming families. It was made bigger in 1933. By 1878, Fulton opened its third schoolhouse. This was a one-room school for white children that stayed open until 1939. The area was also called "Water's Store" because of Richard Waters' blacksmith shop and post office. The post office opened in 1874.

The name of the area officially changed to "Fulton" on March 28, 1882. It was named after Charles C. Fulton, a popular editor of the Baltimore Sun newspaper.

Maple Lawn Farms and Modern Development

In 1839, Heinrich Iager bought 108 acres of farmland. This farm grew to 185 acres and became Maple Lawn Farms. In 1938, the farm started raising free-range turkeys under the "Sho-Nuf" brand. The farm was also recognized in 2004 for its special Holstein cows used for dairy.

In the late 1990s, Fulton was located between areas that were already very developed and areas that were kept natural. Developers wanted to build a large community with homes and businesses on part of the 506-acre Maple Lawn farm. This new community, called Maple Lawn, started to be built around 2004-2005. It brought new shops, restaurants, and offices to Fulton.

Fulton also has several historic places of worship. These include Grace Community Church, St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, and St. Paul's Lutheran Church. St. Paul's was built in the 1870s by German families.
