Fulton is a small, rural place in Lauderdale County, Tennessee, United States. It is an unincorporated community. This means it is not officially a town or city with its own local government. Fulton was started in 1827. It is the oldest settlement in Lauderdale County.
History of Fulton
Fulton was founded in 1827. It was built on about 760 acres of land. This land belonged to a person named James Trimble.
In the next two years, many people moved to Fulton. The population grew to 600 residents. But around 1830, a serious fever spread through the community. About 200 people died from this illness.
Because of the fever, most people left Fulton. By 1832, no one lived there anymore. The area was then re-surveyed. Fulton was re-founded in 1835.
Fulton's Economy
After slavery ended in the United States, a system called sharecropping became common. Sharecropping was a way for families to earn money. These families often had low incomes.
They would use land owned by someone else. In return, they gave a part of their crops to the landowner. Cotton was the main crop grown this way.
Over time, new machines changed farming. The cotton picker is one example. These machines could do the work much faster than people. This made manual labor less needed.
As of 2008, Fulton did not have any large industries. Most people in the area worked in other fields.
Geography of Fulton
