About Fábio Barreto

Fábio Barreto was born in 1957 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He came from a family deeply involved in movies. His parents, Luís Carlos and Lucy Barreto, were famous film producers. His older brother, Bruno Barreto, is also a filmmaker. Bruno directed the very popular movie Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands in 1976.

His Career in Film

Fábio started his career in 1977 when he was just 20 years old. His first directing job was a short film called A estória de José e Maria. Over the years, he acted in two films and directed nine full-length movies. He also directed an episode of a TV series and two other short films.

His first feature film was Índia, a Filha do Sol. It starred Glória Pires as a Native-Brazilian woman trying to survive in a diamond mining area. She falls in love with a soldier. Later, in 1986, he directed O Rei do Rio. This movie was based on a play and told the story of two friends who became rich from illegal gambling. They then became rivals for political power.

Fábio Barreto's film Luzia-Homem was based on a 19th-century novel. It featured Claudia Ohana as a woman seeking revenge for her parents' murder. In 1995, he directed O Quatrilho. This film was a big success because it was the first Brazilian movie since 1962 to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. In 1997, he directed his first English language film, Bela Donna, which was released in the United States as White Dunes.

In 2002, he directed A Paixão de Jacobina, which was praised by critics. A few years later, in 2007, he directed Nossa Senhora de Caravaggio and the Brazilian version of the TV show Desperate Housewives. His last film, Lula, o filho do Brasil, came out in 2009. This movie was his fourth time working with actress Glória Pires. It was chosen to represent Brazil at the Academy Awards, but it did not get nominated.

His Family Life

Fábio Barreto was married twice. He was first married to actress Dora Pellegrino, and they had a daughter named Mariana. Later, he married actress Déborah Kalume in 2003. They had a son named João, born in 2006. Fábio also had two other children, Lucas and Júlia Barreto Borges. His daughter Júlia acted in some of his films, including Luzia Homem, O Quatrilho, and Nossa Senhora de Caravaggio.

The Car Accident

On December 19, 2009, Fábio Barreto was in a serious car accident in Rio de Janeiro. His car hit a wall, flipped over, and he was badly injured. He had to have several surgeries for a serious brain injury. Doctors worked to reduce swelling in his brain. He also had a procedure called a tracheostomy to help him breathe.

Many of Fábio's friends and colleagues visited his family in the hospital. These included filmmakers Guel Arraes and Sérgio Rezende, actress Cristiana Oliveira, and O Quatrilho star Patrícia Pillar. Even the President at the time, Lula, called the Barreto family to offer his support. Fábio remained unconscious for a long time. In August 2014, it was reported that he was in a "minimally conscious state", meaning he showed some small responses but was still not fully awake.
