Gütersloh is a special area in Germany called a Kreis, which is like a district or county. You can find it in the north-east part of North Rhine-Westphalia, one of Germany's states.

A Look Back in Time

The Gütersloh district, or Kreis Gütersloh, was created in 1973. This happened when many districts across North Rhine-Westphalia were reorganized.

Before 1973, there were older districts like Halle and Wiedenbrück. These were combined to form the new Gütersloh district. Parts of other nearby districts, such as Bielefeld, Paderborn, Beckum, and Warendorf, were also added to this new area.

The Gütersloh Coat of Arms

The official coat of arms for Gütersloh was chosen in 1973. It was designed by combining important symbols from the older districts of Halle and Rheda-Wiedenbrück.

These three symbols represent different medieval counties that once existed in this region. The golden eagle at the bottom comes from the old duchy of Rietberg. The wheel in the middle is a symbol from the city of Osnabrück, which used to control the Reckenberg area. The zig-zag lines, called chevrons, at the top are the symbol of the duchy of Ravensberg.
