G. Karthikeyan (born January 20, 1949 – died March 7, 2015) was an important Indian politician. He served as the Speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly. This means he was the main person who led the meetings and discussions in the state's law-making body. He was also a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the Aruvikkara area. He belonged to the Indian National Congress political party.

Becoming a Politician
G. Karthikeyan started his journey in politics through student groups. He was a leader in the Kerala Students Union (KSU). This group helped students learn about politics and work for changes. He earned a Bachelor of Laws degree, which is a university degree in law.
Early Leadership Roles
Karthikeyan was the president of the Kerala Students Union for the whole state. He also held important student leadership roles at Kerala University. He was a student member of the university's senate and the secretary of the Kerala University Union.
After his student days, he continued his political work. He held many positions in the Indian Youth Congress and the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC). These are youth and state-level branches of the main Indian National Congress party. He was the General Secretary of the KPCC.
Important Government Positions
G. Karthikeyan was the only elected Vice President of the KPCC. He also served as the Chief Whip and Deputy Leader of the Congress Legislature Party. A Chief Whip helps make sure all party members vote together on important issues. The Deputy Leader is the second-in-command of the party's elected members in the assembly.
He became a Minister in the Government of Kerala twice. In 1995, he was the Minister for Electricity. This meant he was in charge of managing the state's electricity supply. In 2001, he became the Minister for Food and Civil Supplies. In this role, he looked after how food and other basic goods were distributed to people.
Serving the People
G. Karthikeyan was elected as an MLA to the Kerala Legislative Assembly many times. He represented different areas over the years. He was an MLA in 1982 (for Trivandrum North), and then in 1991, 1996, 2001, and 2006 (for Aryanad). In 2011, he was elected for the Aruvikkara area.
Speaker of the Assembly
In 2011, G. Karthikeyan was chosen to be the Speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly. This was a very important role. As Speaker, he was responsible for making sure that debates and discussions in the assembly followed the rules. He also helped keep order during meetings. He took over this role from K. Radhakrishnan.
G. Karthikeyan passed away on March 7, 2015, when he was 66 years old. He died in Bangalore after suffering from health issues. He was the second Speaker in Kerala's history to die while still in office. He is remembered for his long career serving the people of Kerala.
