Gabriel-Fleury Lake is a natural lake located in the Ashuapmushuan Wildlife Reserve in Quebec, Canada. It's part of a larger water system that eventually flows into Ashuapmushuan Lake. The lake is found in an unorganized territory called Lac-Ashuapmushuan, which is part of the Le Domaine-du-Roy Regional County Municipality.

A railway line belonging to Canadian National Railway and Quebec Route 167 pass just 1.4 km (0.87 mi) north of the lake. These connect cities like Chibougamau and Saint-Félicien. The main activity in this area is forestry, which means cutting down trees for wood. After that, tourism, like fishing or camping, is the next most popular activity.

About the Lake

Gabriel-Fleury Lake is about 1.5 km (0.93 mi) long and 1.0 km (0.62 mi) wide at its widest point. It sits at an elevation of 371 m (1,217 ft) above sea level. The lake gets most of its water from two main sources: the rivière de la Licorne (which flows in from the south) and water flowing out of Lake Douvier (which comes from the north).

You'll find large marshy areas around the eastern part of the lake. Marshes are wetlands, which are areas of land covered by shallow water, often with lots of grasses and other plants. These marshy spots are especially noticeable where the Rivière de la Licorne joins the lake.

Where the Water Goes

The water from Gabriel-Fleury Lake flows out from its western side. From there, the water travels through another lake called Grand Duc Lake. This journey is about 12.8 km (8.0 mi) long.

After Grand Duc Lake, the water continues its path:

  • It flows for 7.3 km (4.5 mi) from Grand Duc Lake.
  • Then, it crosses Ashuapmushuan Lake for another 12.8 km (8.0 mi).
  • Next, it goes down the entire length of the Ashuapmushuan River, which is about 193 km (120 mi) long.
  • After that, the water crosses Lac Saint-Jean eastward for 41.1 km (25.5 mi).
  • Finally, it follows the Saguenay River for 172.3 km (107.1 mi) all the way to Tadoussac. This is where the Saguenay River meets the huge estuary of Saint Lawrence, which leads to the Atlantic Ocean.
