Gabriel Morcillo Raya (born December 8, 1887, in Granada – died December 22, 1973) was a talented Spanish painter. He was known for his beautiful landscapes and portraits. His art often showed a touch of Eastern style and a focus on beauty.

Early Life and Art Training

Gabriel Morcillo Raya began learning about art in his family. He worked in his aunt Paquita Raya's embroidery workshop. He also studied at the Granada School of Fine Arts. His teachers there were Miguel Vico Hernández and José de Larrocha González.

In 1907, Gabriel moved to Madrid for a short time. He wanted to continue his studies with the famous artist Cecilio Plá. However, he had to return to Granada because of money problems.

In 1910, he received a special grant from the Provincial Council of Granada. This grant helped him go back to Madrid and continue his art education. He stayed in Madrid until 1914.

Becoming a Professor

After returning to Granada, Gabriel Morcillo Raya became a member of several important art academies. These included the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Granada, and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Malaga.

In 1918, he was offered a scholarship to study at the Academy of Painting in Rome. But he decided not to go. Instead, he chose to work on his art in a more private way. This was unusual for artists at that time.

In 1927, Gabriel became a full professor at the School of Arts and Crafts of Granada. He taught Decorative Painting and Natural Figure. He had already been teaching there as a temporary professor since 1922. He got the job after passing a special exam.

His Art Style and Famous Works

Gabriel Morcillo Raya mostly painted landscapes and portraits. His paintings often showed influences from Eastern art. They also had a strong sense of beauty and feeling.

His artwork became very popular. He had successful art shows in big cities like New York, Buenos Aires, and Venice.

You can see some of his paintings in the Museum of Fine Arts in Granada. One famous painting there is called El enano de Puerto Real (The Dwarf of Puerto Real), which he painted in 1916.
