Gabriel Jules Joseph Piroird (born October 5, 1932, died April 3, 2019) was a French-born Algerian Catholic leader. He was a prelate, which is a high-ranking church official. He served as the Bishop of Constantine from 1983 until he retired in 2008.
Life of Bishop Gabriel Piroird
Gabriel Piroird was born in southern France. When he was young, he joined a special group called the Institute of the Priests of Prado. This group was started by a blessed person named Antoine Chevrier.
Becoming a Priest and Missionary
After finishing his studies, Gabriel Piroird became a priest on June 27, 1964. In 1968, he started working as a missionary in Algeria. He decided to go there after meeting Algerian people who had moved to his hometown of Lyons.
In Algeria, he worked as a pastor in a town called Bejaia. He also used his skills as an engineer to help with water systems in the area.
Becoming a Bishop
On March 25, 1983, Gabriel Piroird was chosen to be the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Constantine. He officially became a bishop on June 3, 1983. Bishop Jean Scotto was the main person who helped him become a bishop.
Bishop Piroird served in this important role until he retired on November 21, 2008. After his retirement, he moved back to France. He passed away on April 3, 2019.
