Gabriel T. Harrower was an American politician from New York. He was born on September 25, 1816, in Guilford, New York. He passed away on August 15, 1895, in Lawrenceville, Pennsylvania.

Early Life and Work

Gabriel T. Harrower was the son of Benjamin Harrower. When Gabriel was a child, his family moved to Lindley, New York. He went to local schools and also attended the Geneva Lyceum. After his schooling, he worked as a farmer. He was also involved in the lumber business.

Political Beginnings

Harrower became interested in politics early on. In 1848, he joined the Free Soil Party. This party was against slavery spreading into new territories. Later, when the Republican Party was formed, he joined them. The Republican Party also opposed the spread of slavery.

Local Roles

From 1853 to 1855, Gabriel Harrower served as the Sheriff of Steuben County. A sheriff is like the chief law enforcement officer for a county. He was also a Supervisor for the Town of Lindley. A supervisor helps manage the local government of a town.

Family Life

On November 5, 1859, Gabriel Harrower married Helen Parkhurst. She was born in 1837 and passed away in 1911. They had several children together.

Military Service

During the American Civil War, Gabriel Harrower played an important role. He was a commander in the 161st New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment. His regiment fought in the southern United States. They took part in the Siege of Port Hudson. A siege is when an army surrounds a place to try and capture it.

State Politics

After the war, Harrower continued his political career. He became a member of the New York State Senate. This is part of the state's law-making body. He served two terms, in 1872 and 1873.

Changing Parties

In 1872, Gabriel Harrower joined a new group called the Liberal Republican Party. This party was formed by Republicans who were unhappy with the current president. He supported Horace Greeley for president that year.

Later Life

Gabriel T. Harrower passed away on August 15, 1895. He was buried at the Cemetery in Lawrenceville, Pennsylvania.
