Athletics Achievements

Gael Mulhall-Martin was born in Melbourne, Australia. Her father, Ken Mulhall, was also a well-known Australian rules footballer.

She made history at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, United States. She won a bronze medal in the women's shot put event. This was a big moment because she was the first Australian to win an Olympic medal in a throwing sport.

Gael also competed in four Commonwealth Games. These games bring together athletes from countries that were once part of the British Empire.

  • In 1978, at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, she won a gold medal in shot put and a silver medal in discus.
  • At the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, she had an amazing performance. She won two gold medals, one for shot put and one for discus.

Her coach for many years was Franz Stampfl. Throughout her career, Gael won a total of 20 national championships in Australia. This shows how skilled and dedicated she was to her sport.

Powerlifting Career

Besides athletics, Gael Martin also had a successful career in powerlifting. This sport involves lifting heavy weights in three main lifts: squat, bench press, and deadlift.

She represented Australia at the Women's World Powerlifting Championships several times:

  • In 1981, she won a silver medal in Honolulu.
  • In 1983, she won a gold medal in Adelaide.
  • In 1988, she won another silver medal in Brussels.

In 1987, Gael received a special grant from the ACT Talented Athletes Development Awards program. This grant helped athletes who were ranked internationally and had strong support from their sports organizations. It helped her continue to train and compete at a high level.
