The Gage Group Buildings are three special buildings in Chicago, Illinois. You can find them on South Michigan Avenue at numbers 18, 24, and 30. These buildings were constructed between 1890 and 1899. They were designed by architects Holabird & Roche for three companies that made hats. These companies were Gage, Keith, and Ascher.

The building at 18 South Michigan Avenue has a very fancy front, called a façade. This part was designed by a famous architect named Louis Sullivan. The Gage Group Buildings were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. They were also named a Chicago Landmark in 1996.

Unique Architectural Styles

The fronts of these buildings show two different ways of designing in the "Chicago School" style. This style was a big step towards creating modern buildings.

Holabird & Roche's Design

The buildings designed by Holabird & Roche look simple and straightforward. They focus on clear lines and practical design.

Louis Sullivan's Expressive Style

The building designed by Louis Sullivan, however, is much more artistic. It has many decorative details. This shows his unique and expressive way of designing buildings.

The Gage Building: A Chicago Landmark

The tallest building in the group is at 18 South Michigan Avenue. It used to be called the Gage Brothers and Company Building. Before 1909, when Chicago changed its street addresses, this building was known as 130 South Michigan Avenue.

Changes Over Time

In 1902, four more stories were added to the top of the Gage Building. This pushed up the beautiful decorations that Louis Sullivan had designed. This building is one of only five buildings in Chicago designed by Louis Sullivan that are still standing today.

Other Buildings in the Group

The two smaller buildings next to the Gage Building are also part of the Gage Group.

The Edson Keith and Company Building

This building is connected to the Gage Building. It is located at 24 South Michigan Avenue.

The Theodore Ascher and Company Building

This building is also known as the 30 South Michigan Building. It completes the group of three historic buildings.
