The Gagné River (in French: rivière Gagné) is a small river in Quebec, Canada. It is a tributary of the Osgood River. A tributary is a smaller stream or river that flows into a larger one.
The Osgood River then flows into the Palmer River, which joins the Bécancour River. Finally, the Bécancour River flows into the mighty St. Lawrence River. This means the Gagné River's water eventually reaches the St. Lawrence River!
The Gagné River flows through two towns: Thetford Mines and Kinnear's Mills. Both of these towns are in a region called Chaudière-Appalaches in Quebec.
Where the River Flows
The Gagné River starts in the village of Pontbriand, which is part of Thetford Mines. Its source is like the very beginning of the river.
From its source, the Gagné River travels about 6.5 kilometers (about 4 miles) towards the northwest. It keeps flowing until it meets another river.
Meeting Other Rivers
The Gagné River joins the Osgood River in the town of Kinnear's Mills. This meeting point is called a confluence. It happens near a small area known as Plage-Lemieux.
River Basins Nearby
A watershed (or drainage basin) is an area of land where all the water drains into a single river or stream. The Gagné River has several important watersheds nearby:
- To the north: The Osgood River watershed.
- To the east: The Sunday River, Perry River, and Palmer River watersheds.
- To the south: The Prévost stream, Prévost-Gilbert River, Ashberham River, Bécancour River, and Bagot River watersheds.
- To the west: The Old Mill brook and Bullard brook watersheds.
Name of the River
The name "rivière Gagné" was officially recognized on October 6, 1983. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is like a special committee that names places in Quebec.
