Gail Honeyman was born in 1972. She is a Scottish writer. Her first novel, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine, won a big award in 2017. This award was called the Costa First Novel Award.

About Gail Honeyman

Gail Honeyman grew up in Stirling, Scotland. Her mom worked for the government. Her dad worked in science. Gail loved reading when she was a kid. She visited the library many times each week.

She studied French language at the University of Glasgow. Then, she went to the University of Oxford. There, she studied French poetry. But Gail decided that teaching at a university was not for her.

She took on different jobs. First, she worked for the government. She helped with economic development. Later, she became an administrator at the University of Glasgow. This means she helped manage things behind the scenes.

How She Became a Writer

While working at the university, Gail took a writing course. It was at the Faber Academy. She entered a competition for new female writers. She sent in the first three chapters of her book. This book later became Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine.

The novel was published in 2017. It quickly became very popular. It also won many awards. People all over the world loved it.

Her Books

Gail Honeyman's book, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine, won the Costa First Novel Award in 2017. After that, many newspapers and bookshops interviewed her. These included The Guardian and The Daily Telegraph.

She talked about the main character, Eleanor Oliphant. Gail said, "Eleanor Oliphant isn't me, or anyone I know." But she also added, "Of course I've felt loneliness – everybody does." This shows that even though the character is not her, she understands some of Eleanor's feelings.

In January 2018, Gail shared that she was writing a new novel. She said it would be set in a different time and place. A book with the working title Gail Honeyman Untitled Book 2 was listed for publication in late 2024 or early 2025.
