About the Red Hemp-Nettle
The red hemp-nettle is a small plant that blooms with flowers between June and October. You can often find it growing in places like waste ground, along railway tracks, and in other stony areas. It prefers disturbed soil.
Why This Plant Is Endangered
Sadly, the red hemp-nettle is now considered critically endangered. This means it is at a very high risk of disappearing forever. Its numbers have dropped a lot over the last 60 years.
Threats to the Red Hemp-Nettle
One big reason for its decline is the increased use of fertilizer in farming. Fertilizers help crops grow, but they can harm wild plants like the red hemp-nettle. Also, herbicides, which are chemicals used to kill unwanted plants, have hurt it.
Modern farming methods have also played a role. For example, some farmers now cultivate (prepare the soil) in autumn. This kills the red hemp-nettle plants before they can produce their seeds. If plants cannot make seeds, they cannot grow new plants for the next year. This makes it very hard for the species to survive.
