About Gangai Amaran's Life
Gangai Amaran was born in December 1947 in Pannaipuram, a village in the Theni district of Tamil Nadu. He was the youngest son of Ramaswamy and Chinnathayi.
Family Connections
Gangai Amaran comes from a family of artists. His elder brother is the famous music director Ilaiyaraaja. Gangai Amaran is also the father of director and actor Venkat Prabhu. His other son, Premji Amaren, is an actor, composer, and singer. He had two other elder brothers, R. D. Bhaskar and Pavalar Varadharajan, who are no longer alive. Many other family members are also involved in the film industry. These include composers Karthik Raja and Yuvan Shankar Raja, singer Bhavatharini, and costume designer Vasuki Bhaskar. His wife, Manimegalai, passed away in May 2021.
How He Got His Name
Gangai Amaran chose his unique name from two sources. "Gangai" came from a magazine he enjoyed reading as a child. "Amaran" came from "Amar Singh," a pen name he wanted to use when he first started writing song lyrics. He has sometimes had disagreements with his elder brother Ilaiyaraaja during his career.

Working in Films
Gangai Amaran began his career as a music composer. His first film as a composer was Oru Vidukathai Oru Thodarkathai. He composed music for many successful films, often working with his brother Ilaiyaraaja. Some of these films include Mouna Geethangal and Vazhvey Maayam.
He also became a film director. His first movie as a director was Kozhi Koovuthu in 1982. He went on to direct many other films, including the very popular Karagattakaran in 1989. His last film as a director was Themmangu Paattukaran. He also worked as a playback singer, lyricist, and actor in many films. He even lent his voice as a dubbing artist for actor K. Bhagyaraj in films like Puthiya Vaarpugal.
Involvement in Politics
Gangai Amaran also entered the world of politics. He joined the BJP political party. He even planned to run for election in the RK Nagar area in April 2017, but later decided not to. He also served as a member of the Central Board of Film Certification. This board helps decide which films can be shown to the public.
