The Garagoa caecilian (scientific name: Caecilia degenerata) is a special kind of caecilian. Caecilians are amphibians, like frogs and salamanders, but they look more like large worms or snakes because they don't have legs!

This unique animal belongs to the family Caeciliidae. It was first described by a scientist named Emmett Reid Dunn in 1942.

What is a Caecilian?

Caecilians are a group of amphibians that are often mistaken for snakes or worms. They are known for their long, slender bodies and smooth skin. Unlike most amphibians, caecilians do not have legs. They move by wiggling their bodies, much like a snake.

Most caecilians live underground, burrowing through the soil. They are often found in tropical and subtropical regions around the world.

Where the Garagoa Caecilian Lives

The Garagoa caecilian is found only in one country: Colombia. When an animal or plant lives only in one specific place, it is called endemic to that area.

This caecilian lives in the Eastern Mountain Range of Colombia. You can find it in the departments of Boyacá, Santander, and Cundinamarca Department. These areas are known for their beautiful mountain forests.

Its Home and Lifestyle

The Garagoa caecilian's natural home is in montane forests. "Montane" means it lives in mountainous regions. This species is also subterranean, which means it spends most of its life underground. It burrows through the soil, searching for food and staying safe.

Scientists believe this caecilian is quite common in some parts of its habitat. However, like many animals, it faces challenges. One big threat to the Garagoa caecilian is deforestation, which is when forests are cut down. Losing its forest home can make it harder for this unique amphibian to survive.

Conservation Status

The Garagoa caecilian is currently listed as "Data Deficient" (DD) by the IUCN. This means that there isn't enough information about the species to know exactly how many there are or how threatened they might be. More research is needed to understand and protect this fascinating underground amphibian.
