Garber is a city in Clayton County, Iowa, United States. The population was 76 at the time of the 2020 census, down from 103 in 2000.

History

Garber, first called East Elkport, was surveyed in 1872 by John Garber, who also served as the first postmaster there.

Geography

Garber is located at 42°44′38″N 91°15′47″W / 42.74389°N 91.26306°W / 42.74389; -91.26306 (42.743892, -91.263004).

As of the census of 2020, there were 76 people, 39 households, and 23 families residing in the city. The population density was 338.3 inhabitants per square mile (130.6/km2). There were 42 housing units at an average density of 187.0 per square mile (72.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.7% White, 0.0% Black or African American, 0.0% Native American, 1.3% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, 0.0% from other races and 0.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino persons of any race comprised 0.0% of the population.

Of the 39 households, 17.9% of which had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.0% were married couples living together, 17.9% were cohabitating couples, 17.9% had a female householder with no spouse or partner present and 23.1% had a male householder with no spouse or partner present. 41.0% of all households were non-families. 33.3% of all households were made up of individuals, 23.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older.

The median age in the city was 53.5 years. 17.1% of the residents were under the age of 20; 5.3% were between the ages of 20 and 24; 9.2% were from 25 and 44; 42.1% were from 45 and 64; and 26.3% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 52.6% male and 47.4% female.

There were 43 households, of which 23.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.9% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, 2.3% had a male householder with no wife present, and 46.5% were non-families. 32.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 4.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.05 and the average family size was 2.57.

The median age in the city was 43 years. 17% of residents were under the age of 18; 9.1% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 28.4% were from 25 to 44; 29.6% were from 45 to 64; and 15.9% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 51.1% male and 48.9% female.

Education

The municipality is within the boundary of the Central Community School District.
