Garching bei München (meaning Garching near Munich), or just Garching, is a city in Bavaria, Germany. It is located very close to the big city of Munich. Garching is well-known for being home to many important research centers and university departments. Most of these are found at a special area called Campus Garching.

History of Garching

How Garching Became a Science City

Garching used to be a small Bavarian village. After a while, the government of Bavaria decided to create a special plan. They wanted to gather many science and technology places north of Munich. This idea was part of a bigger plan to organize cities better.

In 1959, new homes were built for people working at the Max Planck Society. Then, in 1960, the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics was built in Garching. This was one of the first big research centers to move there.

Growing as a Research Hub

In 1963, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) made plans to move some of its departments to Garching. More research centers followed. The Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics and the Institute for Radiochemistry both opened in Garching in 1964.

In 1966, the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities opened the Walther Meißner Institute for Low Temperature Research. A year later, TUM and the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU) started a joint laboratory for particle accelerators. Also in 1967, TUM moved its chemistry and biology departments to Garching.

Garching also built an area for industries called Garching-Hochbruck. The city even put its local nuclear reactor, which people called the "atomic egg," on its official coat of arms in 1967. This showed how proud Garching was to be a science city.

Garching's Main Areas

The town of Garching has four main parts:

  • Garching city (the main town area)
  • Garching Hochbrück (an industrial area)
  • Campus Garching (where the university and research centers are)

Garching: A High-Tech Center

Garching is part of the Nordallianz. This is a group of eight towns and cities located north of Munich. They work together to promote technology and business in the region.

Getting Around Garching

Garching is located near the Isar river. It is also close to the Bundesautobahn 9, which is a major highway.

The Munich U-Bahn (subway) line U6 connects Garching to Munich. It has three stations in Garching:

  • Garching-Hochbrück
  • Garching
  • Garching-Forschungszentrum (meaning Garching Science Campus)

Universities and Research Institutes

Many important research and science education places are located in Garching. Here are some of them:
