A Look Back: Garcia's History
Early Beginnings
Garcia has a long and interesting past. It was first settled way back in 1849. At that time, it was known as La Plaza de los Manzanares. This makes Garcia one of the oldest places in Colorado where people have lived continuously. It's almost as old as the nearby town of San Luis.
The community got its current name, Garcia, from a local family who lived there. A post office was officially opened in Garcia in 1915. This helped connect the community with the rest of the country.
The Garcia School
There's an old adobe school building in Garcia that holds a lot of history. Adobe is a type of building material made from earth and organic materials. This school has not been used for a long time. However, there are plans to fix it up. The Centennial School District is thinking about renovating it. They hope to bring the Garcia School back to life for students.
