The History of Garden City
Garden City became part of the city of Roanoke in 1949. Before that, it was more like a rural area with lots of open land. Its development really started because of a big factory called the American Viscose Plant. This plant was built along the Roanoke River in 1917.
After 1949, Garden City began to change a lot. It went through something called suburbanization. This means that many new homes and buildings were constructed, turning the area into a suburb. Most of the buildings you see in Garden City today were built during the 1950s and 1960s.
