Garden City is a town in Clark County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 33 at the 2020 census.

History

Garden City was first settled in 1882, but it was in 1887 that Garden City was established as this was the year that the Chicago Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad came through. The town was named from the site's garden-like setting.

Geography

Garden City is located at 44°57′28″N 97°34′47″W / 44.95778°N 97.57972°W / 44.95778; -97.57972 (44.957859, -97.579714).

2010 census

As of the census of 2010, there were 53 people, 21 households, and 17 families residing in the town. The population density was 132.5 inhabitants per square mile (51.2/km2). There were 35 housing units at an average density of 87.5 per square mile (33.8/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 94.3% White and 5.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.7% of the population.

There were 21 households, of which 28.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.9% were married couples living together, 9.5% had a female householder with no husband present, 9.5% had a male householder with no wife present, and 19.0% were non-families. 19.0% of all households were made up of individuals, and 4.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.82.

The median age in the town was 48.2 years. 26.4% of residents were under the age of 18; 1.8% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 11.4% were from 25 to 44; 39.6% were from 45 to 64; and 20.8% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the town was 52.8% male and 47.2% female.
