Garden Suburb is a small, quiet community located in the Greater Newcastle area of New South Wales, Australia. It's part of the City of Lake Macquarie and feels a bit like the countryside, even though it's close to bigger towns. It's about 2 kilometers east of Cardiff.

Garden Suburb's Story: A Look Back

Early Days and First Settlers

Long before anyone else, the Awabakal Aboriginal people lived on this land. They were the first people to call this beautiful area home.

The first official land ownership given by the government, called a land grant, happened in August 1872. It went to a person named James Peatie. You can still find a street named Peaties Road in the area today, named after him. Another land grant was given to John Cherry in March 1876.

Growing into a Suburb

The first time the land was divided into smaller blocks for homes, known as a subdivision, was in 1918. This area included streets like Prospect Road, Park Road, and Marshall Street. It seems this was also when the name 'Garden Suburb' was first used for the community.

Over time, more services came to the area. A post office opened in 1956, making it easier for people to send and receive mail. A local primary school also opened its doors in 1958, giving children a place to learn close to home.

Recent Changes

Between 1999 and 2005, a new housing area called the Forest Hills Estate was built in the southern part of Garden Suburb. The streets in this estate were given names related to plants and flowers.

While the community grew, some services also changed. The local post office closed in 1987, and the convenience store closed in 2007.

Exploring Garden Suburb's Landscape

Garden Suburb is surrounded by natural bushland, which makes it feel very peaceful. You can only get into the area from one road, Myall Road. The land here is quite hilly. The highest point is on Prospect Road, and the lowest point is at Garden Suburb Creek.

Three creeks flow through the area, adding to its natural beauty:

  • Winding Creek: This creek starts near Hillsborough. It flows into Cockle Creek, which then empties into Lake Macquarie.
  • Tickhole Creek: This creek begins near the Newcastle Bypass. It then flows into Winding Creek.
  • Garden Suburb Creek: This creek starts from a dam located in Campbell Reserve. It then flows into Tickhole Creek.

Changes and New Homes: Development Plans

In 2013, a company called Landcom Corporation suggested building 96 new homes in the bushland near Myall Road. Many people in the community were concerned about this plan. Because of these concerns, the project was put on hold for several years.

However, in 2020, after the coronavirus pandemic, the project was sped up. It was officially approved in December 2020. The plan was later changed in January to build 66 homes instead of the original 96.
