The Division of Shortland is a special area in New South Wales, Australia. It's used for elections to the Australian Parliament. This division is long and narrow, stretching along the Pacific Ocean coast. It's usually less than 10 kilometers wide.
On its western side, you'll find Lake Macquarie. The division goes from Charlestown in the north down to Norah Head in the south. It includes towns like Toukley, Doyalson, Swansea, Belmont, and Gateshead.
The Division of Shortland was named after Lieutenant John Shortland. He was an early explorer who explored the Hunter Valley area. This division was created on May 11, 1949. The first election for this area was the 1949 Federal election. Today, it is considered a very strong area for the Labor party. This means that a Labor candidate usually wins the election here easily.
