Gardenburger is a popular brand of veggie burgers. These burgers are a tasty alternative to meat. They were first created in the early 1980s. Paul Wenner, who owned a vegetarian restaurant, invented them. Today, the company Kellanova owns the Gardenburger brand.

How Gardenburger Started
Paul Wenner created the Gardenburger around 1981 or 1982. He made it at his restaurant, The Gardenhouse. This restaurant was in Gresham, Oregon.
In March 1985, his company became official. It was called Wholesome & Hearty Foods, Inc. Paul Wenner and Allyn Smaaland were the founders.
Changes Over the Years
In 2005, Gardenburger faced some financial problems. The company filed for bankruptcy. However, it kept operating as a private company.
In 2006, Gardenburger made a big change. They removed eggs from almost all their products. One item still had eggs, but they were organic and from cage-free chickens.
Later in 2006, the company changed its name back. It became Wholesome & Hearty Foods again. Then, in 2007, a large company called Kellogg Company bought Wholesome & Hearty Foods.
What Gardenburger Makes
Gardenburger makes many different vegetarian and vegan foods. These products are often called meat substitutes. They are designed to taste like meat but are made from plants.
Original Gardenburger Ingredients
The very first Gardenburger was made from several ingredients. These included mushrooms, onions, and brown rice. It also had rolled oats, cheese, and eggs. Garlic and various spices were added for flavor.
Vegetarian and Vegan Options
All Gardenburger products are vegetarian. This means they do not contain meat. However, some products are not vegan. Vegan foods do not contain any animal-derived ingredients. Some Gardenburger items use eggs or dairy products, like milk and cheese.
In 2012, Gardenburger offered five kinds of veggie burgers. These included the Veggie Medley, which is vegan. The Original and Sun-Dried Tomato Basil were vegetarian. They also had the Black Bean Chipotle Veggie Burger, which is vegan. The Portabella burger was another vegetarian option.
