Silas Gardner House
House built by Silas Gardner in the mid-1700s.

Gardnertown is a small community called a hamlet in Orange County, New York. It is also known as a census-designated place, which means it's an area defined by the government for counting people. In 2020, about 4,542 people lived here.

Gardnertown is located inside the larger Town of Newburgh. It's about two miles northwest of the City of Newburgh, which is a separate place. The community gets its name from an early settler named Silas Gardner. His old stone house, built before the American Revolution, is still standing and used as a home today.

Because Gardnertown is in the center of the Town of Newburgh, many important government buildings are located here. These include the Town Hall, the Police Department, and the Code Compliance building.

History of Gardnertown

Gardnertown is named after the Silas Gardner family. Their historic home is still a private residence. In the mid-1950s, Gardnertown Road was split in half to make way for the New York State Thruway.

The area is also home to the ruins of an old gunpowder mill. This mill is part of the Orange Mill Historic District. The ruins are now part of Algonquin Park, which is managed by Orange County.

The Gardnertown Methodist Church was built in 1858. It replaced an even older church from 1825. The church has a fellowship hall that was added in 1957. Next to the church is Gardnertown Cemetery, one of the oldest cemeteries still in use in the Town of Newburgh.

The local American Legion Post 1420 is also located on Union Avenue. Gardnertown Elementary School was originally on Gardnertown Road. A new school was built on Plattekill Turnpike in the mid-1950s, where it is still located today. The old school building later became the Newburgh Town Hall.
