History of Garner

Early Beginnings

The first settlement in this area was called Trappe Springs. It was started in the 1850s by a few families. The current town of Garner was settled later, in the 1880s. It was built about half a mile west of the original Trappe Springs site. The town was named Garner after a person who ran a local cotton gin. A cotton gin is a machine that separates cotton fibers from their seeds.

Growth and Development

For most of the 1900s, Garner grew steadily. In 1914, about 40 people lived there. By 1990, the population had grown to 98. Garner had its own post office for many years, from around 1890 until 1970.

Today, Garner has a Baptist church and an elementary and middle school. There are also a few small businesses in the community. Much of the land around Garner is used for raising livestock, like cattle.

A Local Story

A man named James A. Vance ran the post office and general store in Garner for a long time. A story about him is in a book called Wild Cow Tales by Ben K. Green. The story is titled "The One That Got Away." Mr. Vance was born on June 14, 1871. He came to Garner on October 7, 1894, and he passed away at his home in Garner in 1964.

The Game of 42

Garner is also famous for something fun! Two people from the town are believed to have invented the regional domino game "42" in 1887. This game is still popular today.
