Early Life and Discoveries
Garrett Oliver grew up in Hollis, Queens, a neighborhood in New York City. His dad loved to hunt and cook.
He went to Boston University to study filmmaking. While there, he helped organize concerts for famous bands like R.E.M. and The Ramones. After college, he worked with bands in London for a year.
Oliver then traveled around Europe. He visited countries like Belgium and West Germany. During his travels, he tried many different kinds of beers. This experience sparked his interest in brewing. When he returned to the United States in 1983, he started making his own beer at home.
Becoming a Brewmaster
In 1989, Garrett Oliver began learning to brew professionally. He started as an apprentice at the Manhattan Brewing Company. By 1993, he became the head brewer, or brewmaster, there.
In 1994, Oliver joined the Brooklyn Brewery. He has been their brewmaster ever since. He also became a partner in the company. As brewmaster, he is in charge of creating and overseeing all the beers made at the brewery.
Beer and Food Expert
Garrett Oliver is very interested in how beer can be enjoyed with food. This is called beer pairing. He also loves cooking with beer. He has written several books about these topics.
