Garrettsville is a small village located in northeastern Portage County, Ohio. In 2020, about 2,449 people lived there. It's part of the larger Akron metropolitan area. The village was created from parts of several nearby townships.

History of Garrettsville

Early Settlement and Growth

Colonel John Garrett III bought 300 acres of land in 1803. This was the same year Ohio became a state. He paid about $4.40 for each acre. In July 1804, he moved to this land with his family. They also brought two young enslaved girls, aged 6 and 10.

The settlers built a grist mill, which opened in January 1806. Sadly, Colonel Garrett passed away that same month.

In 1806, the Cleveland-Pittsburgh Road was built near Garrett's mill. This road helped trade and business grow in the area. Pioneers from nearby places would bring their grain to the mill. They built roads and trails to connect to the Cleveland-Pittsburgh Road. In 1830, the Garrettsville Post Office was opened. By 1864, enough people lived around the mill to form a settlement. It officially became a village on September 1, 1864.

Notable Events and People

In November 1935, a famous train robbery happened in Garrettsville. A man named Alvin Karpis, who was part of the Barker-Karpis Gang, stole $30,000. He escaped by private airplane. Karpis was later caught and sent to Alcatraz prison. He stayed there longer than any other prisoner.

On March 22, 2014, a big fire broke out in downtown Garrettsville. It destroyed about one city block and 13 businesses. Firefighters from 34 nearby communities helped put out the blaze. Luckily, no one was seriously hurt, though one firefighter had smoke inhalation. Rick Patrick is the current mayor of Garrettsville.

Maple Syrup and Sweet Inventions

Garrettsville was once known as the biggest center in the world for processing maple syrup. This happened at the start of the 1900s. Arthur Crane played a big role in this. He canned maple syrup at his factory on Windham Street.

Arthur's son, Clarence Arthur (C.A.) Crane, grew up in Garrettsville. He married Grace Edna Hart in the village in 1898. In 1899, Grace gave birth to their son, Harold Hart Crane. Harold later became a very famous poet.

Clarence Crane and his family left Garrettsville in the 1900s. Clarence continued working with maple sugar and candies. In 1912, his company, the Queen Victoria Chocolate Company, invented the popular Life Savers candy.
