Garry's Football Journey
Garry Rodrigues started his football journey as a young player. He trained with famous clubs like Feyenoord in the Netherlands and Real Sport Clube in Portugal.
Playing for ADO Den Haag and Dordrecht
In May 2012, Garry joined ADO Den Haag, a club in the top Dutch league. He signed a contract for one year, with an option for another year. Soon after, in July, he was loaned out to Dordrecht, a club in a lower division.
He played his first league game for Dordrecht on August 10, 2012. It was an away match against Emmen, which ended in a 1–1 draw. Garry played the entire game.
Time with Levski Sofia
On February 11, 2013, Garry moved to Bulgaria and signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with Levski Sofia. He made his first appearance for them on March 3, in a 2–0 win against Chernomorets Burgas.
Just ten days later, on March 13, he scored his first goal for Levski. This happened during a cup match against Litex Lovech. On April 20, he scored his first league goal for the team and also helped set up another goal.
In July 2013, Garry scored the first goal in Levski's new season. However, he was later sent off (meaning he had to leave the field) after an argument with another player.
During the first half of the 2013–14 season, Garry scored 14 goals in total. His strong performance helped Levski Sofia move up to third place in their league. He also scored a penalty in a big cup match against CSKA Sofia, which his team won after a penalty shootout. Because he was playing so well, many other European clubs became interested in him.
Moving to Elche
On January 27, 2014, Garry joined Elche CF in Spain. He was first on a six-month loan. He made his debut in La Liga, Spain's top league, on March 1. He came on as a substitute in a 1–0 win against Celta de Vigo.
He scored his first La Liga goal on May 3, which was the only goal in a win against Málaga CF. In the summer of 2014, Garry signed a four-year contract with Elche. However, he left the club on July 31, 2015.
Playing for PAOK
On August 4, 2015, Garry signed a three-year contract with PAOK, a club in Greece. He scored his first goal in the Greek Super League on September 23, 2015, in a derby match against AEK Athens.
In January 2016, PAOK turned down a big offer for Garry from a club in Saudi Arabia. He finished that season as the third-highest scorer for PAOK, with seven goals.
On November 24, 2016, Garry scored a very important late goal in a UEFA Europa League match against ACF Fiorentina. This goal gave PAOK a 3–2 win.
Joining Galatasaray
On January 9, 2017, PAOK announced that Garry was moving to Galatasaray in Turkey. The transfer fee was €3.7 million. By February 2018, he had scored five goals and made eight assists in 22 league games for Galatasaray.
He was set to stay with Galatasaray until the summer of 2021.
Time in Saudi Arabia and Loan to Fenerbahçe
On January 6, 2019, Garry moved to Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia for €9 million. However, he didn't stay there for long.
On July 13, 2019, Fenerbahçe, another big Turkish club, announced that Garry would join them on a two-year loan from Al-Ittihad.
Return to Greece with Olympiacos
On September 18, 2021, Olympiacos F.C. in Greece officially announced that they had signed Garry. He signed a three-year contract with an annual fee of €1 million, plus bonuses.
Latest Club: Ankaragücü and Sivasspor
On August 19, 2023, Garry signed a two-year contract with Ankaragücü, another club in the Turkish Süper Lig. He later joined Sivasspor.
International Career with Cape Verde
Garry Rodrigues received his first call-up to play for the Cape Verde national team in August 2013. He played in a friendly match against Gabon on August 14, coming on as a substitute.
On December 30, 2013, Garry started in a friendly match against Catalonia. Cape Verde lost 4–1, but Garry helped set up his team's only goal.
First International Goal and Africa Cup of Nations
On September 6, 2014, he scored his first international goal in a 3–1 away win against Niger. This win helped Cape Verde qualify for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations. Garry was part of the squad for the tournament in Equatorial Guinea. However, he only played in one match, a goalless draw against Zambia, which led to Cape Verde's elimination.
In January 2022, Garry was again part of the Cape Verde squad for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. He played in all four of his team's matches. He assisted the winning goal in their first game against Ethiopia. He also scored the goal that tied the game 1–1 against the host nation, Cameroon. This goal helped Cape Verde qualify for the knockout stage of the tournament.
In December 2023, Garry was chosen for his third Africa Cup of Nations tournament, the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast. On January 14, 2024, in Cape Verde's first match against Ghana, he scored a goal in the 92nd minute. This late goal gave Cape Verde a 2–1 win.
