Captain Garth Neville Walford (born May 27, 1882 – died April 26, 1915) was a brave officer in the British Army. He received the Victoria Cross, which is the highest award for bravery in the face of the enemy. This special medal is given to soldiers from Britain and other Commonwealth countries.
Early Life and Joining the Army
Garth Walford was born in Camberley, England. His father was also a soldier in the Royal Artillery.
In 1902, Garth Walford joined the British Army. He started as a second lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery. This part of the army uses big guns to support soldiers in battle.
Heroic Actions at Gallipoli
During the First World War, Garth Walford became a captain. He showed incredible bravery on April 26, 1915, during a battle called the V Beach landing in Gallipoli, Turkey.
Many senior officers were killed during this tough battle. Captain Walford, along with another brave officer named Charles Hotham Montagu Doughty-Wylie, stepped up. They quickly organized an attack on an old fort located at the top of a hill.
Their leadership helped their soldiers succeed in capturing the fort. Sadly, both Captain Walford and Charles Doughty-Wylie were killed during this heroic action.
Remembering a Hero
Captain Walford was 32 years old when he died. He was married to Elizabeth Walford. He is buried at the V Beach Cemetery. His bravery and sacrifice are remembered as an important part of history.
