Gary Mehigan is a famous English-Australian chef and restaurant owner. He was born on February 12, 1967. Many people know him as one of the first judges on the popular TV show MasterChef Australia.
Gary Mehigan's Culinary Journey
Becoming a Top Chef
Gary Mehigan started his cooking training in London, England. He worked at famous places like The Connaught and Le Souffle. In 1991, he moved to Melbourne, Australia.
In Melbourne, Gary became the head chef at several well-known restaurants. These included Browns, Burnham Beeches Country House, and Hotel Sofitel. In 2000, he opened his own award-winning restaurant called Fenix. He later sold Fenix in 2013. He also used to own another restaurant called The Boathouse in Moonee Ponds.
Life on Television
Gary Mehigan became a household name when he joined MasterChef Australia. He was one of the first three judges, working alongside George Calombaris and Matt Preston. He was a judge for 11 seasons, leaving the show in 2019.
Before MasterChef, Gary also hosted other cooking shows. He co-hosted Good Chef Bad Chef and Boys Weekend on Australia's LifeStyle Food channel. He also appeared at the Good Food & Wine Show in 2011.
In 2015, Gary started a new TV series called Far Flung with Gary Mehigan. In this show, he traveled to different countries in Asia. He visited places like India, Vietnam, and South Korea. He learned about local cooking styles and recipes. At the end of each episode, he would use what he learned to create a new dish.
After leaving MasterChef Australia, Gary continued his TV career. In 2020, he joined Matt Preston and Manu Feildel for a new show. This show was on the Seven Network and was called Plate of Origin. In 2022, Gary also appeared as a guest judge on My Kitchen Rules.
