Early Life and Education

Gary Middleton was born in Newbuildings, which is in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. He went to the University of Ulster. There, he studied Computer Science. He also earned a special diploma in Civic Leadership and Community Planning from the same university.

Before becoming an MLA, Gary worked with young people as a youth worker. He also helped other politicians. He was an assistant to William Hay and later Maurice Devenney, who were both MLAs for Foyle.

Political Career and Elections

Gary Middleton started his political journey at a young age. He was first chosen to be part of the Derry City Council in 2011. He was only 20 years old at the time. He took the place of William Hay on the council.

Serving as Deputy Mayor

From June 2013 to March 2015, Gary Middleton held an important role. He served as the Deputy Mayor of Derry City Council. This meant he helped lead the council and represent the city.

Joining the New Council

In 2014, a new council was formed. It was called the Derry and Strabane District Council. Gary was elected to this new "super council." He was chosen to be the leader of the DUP councillors in this new group.

Becoming an MLA

In April 2015, Gary Middleton became a member of the Northern Ireland Assembly. He replaced another DUP member, Maurice Devenney. At 24 years old, Gary was the youngest member of the Assembly at that time.

Running for Parliament

Soon after joining the Assembly, Gary Middleton was chosen to run for the United Kingdom Parliament. He was the DUP candidate for the Foyle area in the 2015 general election. He finished third in that election.
