Early Life and Education
Gary Middleton was born in Newbuildings, which is in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. He went to the University of Ulster. There, he studied Computer Science. He also earned a special diploma in Civic Leadership and Community Planning.
Before becoming a full-time politician, Gary worked with young people as a youth worker. He also helped other politicians. He was an assistant to William Hay, who was an MLA for Foyle. Later, he worked for Maurice Devenney.
Starting in Local Politics
Gary Middleton began his political journey in 2011. He was first chosen to be a member of the Derry City Council. He was only 20 years old at the time. He took the place of William Hay through a process called co-option. This means he was appointed to the role.
From June 2013 to March 2015, Gary also served as the Deputy Mayor of Derry City. In 2014, he was elected to a new, larger council called the Derry and Strabane 'super council'. He became the leader for the DUP councillors in this new council.
Becoming an MLA
In April 2015, Gary Middleton became a member of the Northern Ireland Assembly. He was again chosen through co-option, replacing Maurice Devenney. At 24 years old, he was the youngest member of the Assembly.
Soon after joining the Assembly, Gary was chosen to represent the DUP in the 2015 United Kingdom general election. He ran for the Foyle constituency. He finished third in that election.
Serving as Junior Minister
Gary Middleton served as a Junior Minister at the Executive Office. This office helps the First Minister and Deputy First Minister with their duties. He first held this role temporarily from February to March 2021. This was while Gordon Lyons was acting as Agriculture Minister.
