Early Elections and Local Council Work
In 2011, Gordon Lyons tried to become an MLA for East Antrim. He also ran for a local council position in the Coast Road area of Larne Borough Council. He was not elected in either of these attempts.
However, in 2014, he was successful. He was elected to represent the Coast Road area on the new Mid and East Antrim District Council. This was an important step in his political journey.
Becoming an MLA

He was re-elected as an MLA in the 2016 Assembly Election. During this time, he was part of the Economy Committee. He also chaired the Committee for Procedures, which helps decide how the Assembly works.
Leadership Roles in the DUP
After being re-elected in the 2017 NI Assembly Election, Gordon Lyons took on more responsibility. The leader of the DUP, Arlene Foster, made him the DUP Assembly Group Chief Whip. This role involves making sure party members vote in line with the party's decisions.
