The Garza Revolution, or the Garza War, was a small armed conflict. It happened in the Mexican state of Coahuila and the American state of Texas. The conflict took place between 1891 and 1893.

It started when a man named Catarino Garza tried to lead an uprising. He wanted to overthrow the Mexican leader, Porfirio Díaz, who was like a powerful ruler at the time. Garza launched his campaign from Texas, which was a neutral country. Because of this, the United States Army got involved. They helped the Mexican Army find Garza's followers.

This war was not as big as other conflicts in Mexican history. However, some people see it as an early sign of the much larger Mexican Revolution that happened later, from 1910 to 1920.

Who Was Catarino Garza?

Catarino Garza was a journalist and a revolutionary. He believed in freedom and wanted to change Mexico. He was against the way Porfirio Díaz ruled the country. Díaz had been in power for a very long time. Many people felt he was a dictator, meaning he had total control.

Garza wanted to start a rebellion to remove Díaz from power. He gathered a group of supporters. They planned to cross the border from Texas into Mexico.

Why Did the Conflict Start?

The main reason for the Garza Revolution was political. Catarino Garza strongly disagreed with Porfirio Díaz's government. He felt that Díaz was not a good leader for Mexico. Garza wanted to bring about a big change in his home country.

He believed that an armed uprising was the only way to achieve this. So, he organized his followers in Texas. Their goal was to invade Mexico and start a revolution there.

The Role of the United States

When Garza launched his campaign from Texas, it caused a problem. Texas was part of the United States. The U.S. was supposed to be neutral in Mexico's internal affairs. This means they should not take sides.

Garza's actions broke this rule of neutrality. Because of this, the United States Army had to get involved. Their job was to stop Garza's group. They worked together with the Mexican Army. They tracked down Garza's followers on both sides of the border. This cooperation between the two armies helped to end the conflict.

Where Did It Happen?

The fighting and tracking of Garza's group happened in two main areas:

  • In Mexico, it was mostly in the state of Coahuila. This state shares a border with the United States.
  • In the United States, the activities took place in the state of Texas. This is where Garza organized his forces.

The border region was a key area for this conflict. It allowed Garza's group to move between the two countries.

The End of the Revolution

The Garza Revolution lasted for about a year and a half. It began in September 1891 and ended around March 1893. The combined efforts of the Mexican and U.S. armies were successful. They managed to stop Garza's rebellion.

The conflict ended with a victory for both Mexico and the United States. Garza's attempt to start a major uprising was put down. While it was a small conflict, it showed the tensions building in Mexico. These tensions would later lead to the much larger Mexican Revolution.
