Gastrotheca argenteovirens dunni Lutz, 1977

Gastrotheca dunni is a special type of frog. It belongs to a group of frogs called Hemiphractidae. This frog lives only in a specific area: the northern part of the Western Mountains in northern Antioquia, Colombia. When a species lives only in one place, it's called endemic. People often call this frog Dunn's marsupial frog. It got its name, dunni, from Emmett Reid Dunn, a scientist who studied reptiles and amphibians.

What Does Dunn's Marsupial Frog Look Like?

These frogs are not very big. Adult male frogs are about 32–43 mm (1.3–1.7 in) long. Female frogs are a bit larger, measuring about 33–55 mm (1.3–2.2 in) from their snout to their rear end.

Body Features

The frog's head is a little wider than it is long. Its snout, or nose area, is rounded. The tympanum, which is like its eardrum, is brown.

Hands and Feet

The frog's fingers have wide discs at the end. These discs are much wider than the fingers themselves. Its toes are about half-webbed, which means there's some skin between them.

Color and Markings

The back of the frog, called the dorsum, can be tan or a dull green color. Sometimes, it has dark brown lines along its back. It might also have small dark spots. Most of these frogs have a light-colored stripe along their sides. The sides of their body are usually gray or have dark spots. The belly area is a pale creamy gray, and it rarely has dark spots.

Where Does Dunn's Marsupial Frog Live?

Gastrotheca dunni is a common frog species. It can live in many different places. You can find it in both old, untouched forests and newer forests that are growing back. It also lives in grasslands.

Habitat and Environment

This frog is very good at adapting to different environments. It can live in places changed by humans, like farms and city gardens. It lives at high altitudes, from 2,000–4,000 m (6,600–13,100 ft) above sea level.

Reproduction and Life Cycle

One interesting thing about this frog is how it raises its young. The female frog carries her eggs in a special pouch on her back. After the eggs hatch into tadpoles, she carries them to a pool of water. The tadpoles then finish growing there.

Conservation Status

Scientists believe that Gastrotheca dunni is not currently facing any major threats. This means their numbers are stable, and they are doing well in their habitats.
